EMA (exponential moving average)

The Exponential Moving Average (EMA) is a technical indicator that smooths price data, giving more weight to recent prices to show trend direction.

The Exponential Moving Average (EMA) is a technical analysis tool that calculates a weighted average of an asset's price over a specified period. Unlike a Simple Moving Average (SMA), the EMA assigns greater importance to recent price data, making it more sensitive and responsive to current market movements. It aims to smooth out price fluctuations and highlight the underlying trend.

Retail traders commonly use EMAs to identify trend direction and potential entry or exit points. A faster EMA (e.g., 20-period) crossing a slower EMA (e.g., 50-period) can signal a trend change. However, EMAs can generate false signals in ranging markets, leading to whipsaws and unnecessary transaction costs. Combining EMAs with other indicators or price action analysis is crucial to mitigate risk.
