US dollar index (DXY)

The US Dollar Index (DXY) measures the dollar's strength relative to a weighted basket of six major global currencies.

The US Dollar Index (DXY) tracks the dollar's value against a basket of six major currencies: Euro, Japanese Yen, British Pound, Canadian Dollar, Swedish Krona, and Swiss Franc. The Euro has the largest weighting at 57.6%. DXY is a geometrically weighted average, with a base value of 100.00 established in March 1973. Its current value indicates the dollar's appreciation or depreciation against this composite.

For retail traders, the DXY serves as a broad indicator of USD strength or weakness across the market. A rising DXY can signal potential declines in USD quote currency pairs like EUR/USD, and rises in USD base currency pairs such as USD/JPY. Traders often monitor DXY to confirm trends, identify divergences, or assess overall market sentiment related to the dollar, aiding in strategic decision-making for their individual positions.
