Breakout

A breakout occurs when price moves decisively beyond a defined support or resistance level.

A breakout happens when the market price crosses and closes beyond a significant support or resistance level. This movement indicates that either buying or selling pressure has overcome the previous equilibrium. Traders look for sustained movement past these barriers, often accompanied by increased volume, to confirm the validity of the price action.

For a retail trader, identifying genuine breakouts requires careful confirmation to avoid false signals, known as fakeouts. Entering too early or without confirmation can lead to losses if the price quickly reverses. Traders typically use stop-loss orders to manage risk and protect capital, placing them beyond the breakout level to limit potential downside.
