ESMA leverage caps

ESMA leverage caps are regulatory limits on the maximum leverage retail traders can use, primarily in the EU.

ESMA (European Securities and Markets Authority) introduced these caps to restrict the leverage offered to retail traders by brokers within its regulatory scope. For major currency pairs, the maximum leverage is typically 30:1. Minor currency pairs and gold are capped at 20:1. Indices have a 10:1 limit, and individual stocks are limited to 5:1. These caps mean a retail trader requires significantly more margin to open the same trade size.

For retail traders, these caps directly reduce potential profits and losses. While lower leverage limits the size of positions that can be opened with a given capital, it also reduces the risk of rapid account depletion from adverse price movements. It forces traders to use more of their own capital for each trade, promoting more conservative position sizing and potentially correcting habits of overtrading or excessive risk-taking.
