Notional value
Notional value is the total face value of a financial position, representing the full value of the asset being controlled.
Notional value refers to the total value of an asset or position in a financial instrument, calculated without considering leverage or margin. For example, trading one standard lot of EUR/USD means controlling 100,000 euros. The notional value of this position is 100,000 EUR, equivalent to approximately 108,000 USD at an exchange rate of 1.0800. This value is fixed by the contract size, regardless of the capital required to open the trade.
For a retail trader, understanding notional value highlights the significant exposure taken with leveraged products. A small margin deposit allows control over a large notional amount, amplifying both potential profits and losses. This means even a small price movement, like a 10-pip move on EUR/USD, results in a substantial dollar change (e.g., $100 for a standard lot), emphasizing the importance of precise position sizing and risk management relative to account equity.
